Spatial Display: the ultimate eye-catcher for your shop or lobby

Forget the Holobox and other bulky 3D installations, because this year is all about the Spatial Display. This promising new technology from Samsung was launched earlier this year, and visitors to our stand at Gondola Day were able to experience the Spatial Display’s 3D effect for themselves. One thing is clear: the Spatial Display is the eye-catcher of the moment! 

We’ve tested the Spatial Display… and approved it ;-). In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at how this new technology works, discuss its benefits, and share our own insights into the content that works best.

What is a Spatial Display?

The Spatial Display is a screen that creates an optical illusion of a 3D space. It looks as though there is an entire room behind the screen, whilst in reality the screen is only a few centimetres thick:

To create this sense of depth, the Spatial Display makes clever use of perspective lines that move in response to your position in relation to the screen. The perspective lines are actually ‘inside’ the screen, and not part of the animation. This, combined with holographic content, creates the illusion of depth and makes objects appear to be a genuine part of this 3D space:

The Spatial Display is currently available in 32”, 55” and 85”.

How does the Spatial Display work?

Unlike the Holobox, the depth effect on the Spatial Display is generated entirely digitally and optically within the panel itself.

The 3D effect on the Spatial Display is created by 3D-Plate technology: a lenticular layer that Samsung places over the screen. This layer directs the light in such a way that your left and right eyes perceive slightly different perspectives. Your brain combines these two images into a true stereoscopic 3D image with a perceived depth of up to one metre!

What are the advantages of a Spatial Display?

The biggest advantage has already been mentioned: the Spatial Display is only a few centimetres thick, meaning it takes up very little space in your shop or lobby and therefore requires no extra depth in your wall.

In addition, the Spatial Display has a number of other advantages:

  • Unique 3D illusion: with the Spatial Display, you can present 360° rotating visuals, showing the front, back and side views of a product or scene.
  • Crystal-clear image quality: thanks to the 4K UHD resolution, the images are crystal-clear and rich in contrast.
  • Anti-reflective coating: thanks to the anti-reflective coating, the image remains clear, even in bright light.
  • Simple installation: installing the Spatial Display is exceptionally straightforward. No complicated configuration is required; just like a digital signage screen, it’s a plug-and-play solution.
  • Centralised content management: just like a standard digital signage screen, you can control the content on the Spatial Display remotely via your trusted CMS system.

Do you need to create custom content for the Spatial Display?

Yes! Although the Spatial Display is essentially a standard screen, there are a few things you need to bear in mind to really make the most of the 3D effect. However, provided you follow the guidelines, creating content for the Spatial Display is certainly not rocket science.

Our designers also tested 3D content on the Spatial Display. To round off, we’d like to summarise a few findings from our graphics team:

  • The Spatial Display does not require any specific file types; a standard MP4 format is sufficient.
  • Although 3D animations work particularly well, you can also create a very realistic effect with 2D content. By taking the right shading and layering into account in your content, you are certainly not limited to high-end 3D animations.
  • Green-screen recordings are also perfectly suited to the Spatial Display. For example, on the 85-inch model, you can create a life-size human hologram so that it looks as though a real person is standing before you.
  • The holographic effect works best by rotating objects around their axis.
  • You can also experiment with different backgrounds and colours. The Spatial Display’s effect isn’t limited to a white background, giving you plenty of freedom in your content creation.
