Docks makes a splash with LED

Sustainable and energy-efficient

Have you seen and been blown away by the impressive LED walls at Docks Bruxsel in Brussels? This modern shopping centre makes a splash with six large LED walls – together totalling a whopping 85 square metres of pixels.

Impressive LED walls

Unique hotspot

Docks Bruxsel opened its doors in 2016 and has since become one of the capital’s must-visit hotspots. Built on Brussels’ oldest industrial site and offering 60,000 square metres of retail space, the shopping centre combines leisure, shopping, dining, culture, and entertainment.

Naturally, digital signage was a key part of the concept. “Docks was looking for a digital signage solution that wasn’t just visually impressive, but also high-quality and durable,” says Nele Bruers, CEO at DOBIT. The result? Two striking outdoor LED walls on the façade, two screens under the escalators, and two 'bulkheads' mounted on the balustrades.

The total energy consumption of these six LED walls is six times lower than that of the previous two screens. Proof that choosing a premium brand really pays off.

Ensuring digital uptime

Retail media

In addition to general marketing messages from the shopping centre itself, Docks is actively embracing the potential of retail media. “JCDecaux manages the advertising space on the LED walls. Brands can purchase ad space to gain high visibility for their products and promotions,” says Nele Bruers, CEO at DOBIT.

“With this retail media approach, screen uptime becomes crucial – every minute counts so no ad time is lost. That’s why it’s so important to choose a premium brand and back it with a solid maintenance contract, to guarantee maximum uptime and a stable, sustainable, and long-term solution.”

Location and viewing distance

Choosing the right LED wall

When selecting the right LED wall, a number of factors come into play – location being one of the most important. Outdoor LED walls, for instance, must be weather-resistant and bright enough to remain clearly visible in direct sunlight. To automatically adjust brightness throughout the day, the outdoor LED walls at Docks are equipped with integrated light sensors.

Indoor LED walls don’t need such high brightness, but they do require a smaller pixel pitch, as the viewing distance is typically much shorter. Depending on these - and other - factors, we work together to determine which LED wall provides the best and most cost-efficient solution for each specific environment.

Flexibility

Challenging installation

The installation at Docks was no small feat. “We installed two LED walls diagonally above the escalators. The LED panels were mounted upside down using a custom-designed rack and secured in a special way to prevent shifting due to vibrations from the escalators”, explains Werner Weckx, Solutions Architect at DOBIT.

“As for the LED walls on the balustrades, a unique casing was developed to address another challenge. The windows above those walls can open and close, so we designed an enclosure to protect the LED panels in case of a sudden rain shower – especially if the windows are not closed on time. Adding to the complexity, all installation work had to be carried out at night to guarantee visitor safety. It was a challenging project that called on all our experience and technical know-how. The flexibility and expertise of our installation team really made the difference.”
